Kingfisher Lacrosse is the operational name of the Cedar Rapids – Iowa City Lacrosse Club, a volunteer led, 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2020 to guide the development of youth lacrosse in the greater Cedar Rapids - Iowa City area.

We support learn to play opportunities working with PE teachers, Parks and Rec Departments and other youth sports teams and clubs to expose kids to America's original game.

We sponsor competitive training and game play for boys and girls, from 10U through High School. Our teams compete against other lacrosse clubs in Iowa with occasional games against other clubs drawn from across the Midwest.

Our Story

The Kingfisher story begins on a lacrosse field in Des Moines. An Iowa City player originally from Virginia had been playing for the West Des Moines Tigers and was nearing the end of her career. Leaders from the Des Moines area programs (West Des Moines, Ankeny, Waukee, and Ames) approached this parent and asked him to help push the development of a club in the greater Cedar Rapids - Iowa City region. To that point, there were teams in Dubuque and the Quad Cities and the collection of teams in greater Des Moines, but the state's second largest metropolitan region lacked a program.

Big ideas have small beginnings. That parent, Jeff Kueter, organized a meeting with area Parks & Rec departments, Cornell College lacrosse, and a few select leaders from the established clubs. The meeting resulted in partnerships that are the core of Kingfisher's success -- strong ties with the area college programs (Cornell's men's and women's programs, joined recently by Mount Mercy's women's program) and strong partnerships with Parks & Rec departments that provide opportunities to reach families throughout the Corridor.

This and subsequent conversations led to several individuals stepping forward -- Kevin MacBride, Roman Meyers, Alexander Palensky, Kevin Maxwell, Meredith Meier, and Samantha Ziemba -- to offer their time and knowledge to train the first group of players in 2019-2020. These individuals worked tirelessly to raise awareness of lacrosse by working countless clinics, free practices, and one on one sessions. By the fall of 2020, there was sufficient interest to warrant creation of a formal organization with the goal of supporting competitive play in 2021 - and Kingfisher Lacrosse was born.

Spring 2021 began with equipment borrowed from other programs, contributions from national organizations, and donations from individuals, nevertheless 30 or so players took the field and competed. Subsequent years saw strong growth, validating the optimism of the founders. By 2024, 100 players took the field in Kingfisher colors! Lacrosse has arrived in Eastern Iowa.

Our Board

Our club is volunteer-led. Without the dedicated support of parents, our club would not be where we are today. Parents are encouraged and welcomed to step forward to lend a hand on the field (as coaches or officials or sideline helpers - we will teach you!) or off the field (as team managers, event organizers, fundraisers, recruiters and connectors to other organizations).

We are grateful for the service of the 2024-25 Board of Directors.
